JOB DESCRIPTION

Our School Nurse is responsible for the overall health and wellness of our school community, attending to individual learners’ needs as well as managing the overall health education landscape to ensure optimum wellbeing.

 

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure First Aid equipment is maintained and within applicable usable dates.
  • Regular training courses are available to staff and practices are in place.
  • Ensure that equipment, responses, and procedures for Emergency Care is a priority.  This includes examination of patients, administering care, response route and travelling with the patient to the nearest hospital; as well as communication procedures with the parents/guardians and school management.
  • Be responsible for clinic maintenance, cover, supplies and overall cleanliness.
  • Educate the community on overall Health Programmes that may affect learners’ attendance, for example; head lice, safe mosquito practices, CPR training, etc.
  • Attend to individual learners’ medical needs, from medicine administration to awareness of any allergy or condition they may have. Maintain regular communication with parents/guardians, school management and teachers on medical care plans.
  • Regular communication with staff on health and wellness of the school community, updating of required records and reports as per school guidelines, and help refine school policies and procedures. 

 

A TYPICAL DAY

Our clinic opens from 8am to 4.30pm, we normally arrive earlier to ensure that we are set up and ready for the day. Today, we are holding a Helpers’ Workshop on CPR training, this helps our school community prepare for any emergency that could happen when caring for children.  Break time is a busy period where we administer first aid to children that have injured themselves while playing. We update their records and inform parents/guardians, as required.  We regularly meet with relevant stakeholders (parents, counsellors, teachers, phase leaders, etc) on any recent event, illness or a change in a learner’s condition. Today, we are discussing a support system for a learner with a mental illness and a recent dengue outbreak in a nearby area. Extra-Curricular activities begin from 3.30pm and we have a sports match on the field.  One nurse will remain on-site in the event of any emergency.  

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • Qualified to practice as a Registered Nurse in Singapore
  • Certified in Basic Cardiac Life Support & AED training
  • A minimum of two years’ experience working in public health nursing, community health nursing, school health nursing or pediatric nursing
  • Experience in an international school or tertiary education environment is an advantage
  • Great interpersonal skills
