Under the direction of the Subject Leader the job-holder is expected to support and assist the smooth running of the Music Team. Preparing the Music Studios/Classrooms for music lessons and ensuring an orderly environment are key aspects of the role. The job-holder will support Teaching and Learning via administrative, curricular and extracurricular activities. This role would suit a musician who would get involved with all aspects of the team’s work. The Assistant would oversee the main administration of the Nexus Instrumental Programme.



  • Occasionally assist the Music Teachers in the designated classes, working with groups, individuals, accompanying.

  • Assume responsibility for supervising groups of children, or individual children on specified activities such as Music Events or Ensembles.

  • Assist and lead Music CCAs (clubs), either in a conducting, directing or accompanying role within one’s own area of expertise.

  • Monitor, order, maintain and shop for stock, equipment and resources.

  • Help to maintain effective displays in the Music area.

  • Assist with the preparation of music events.

  • Attend staff meetings, participate in performance management arrangements and undertake training and development activities.

  • Ensure music rooms and studios are fully equipped and maintained ready for teachers and learners to use. Liaise with Facilities Team other technicians as appropriate.

  • Manage musical equipment store and inventory.

  • Prepare and reinstate specialist performance spaces.

  • Liaise with facilities to ensure the maintenance of a safe, hygienic and professional environment.

  • Oversee music studios and equipment bookings daily. Follow up with learners when necessary.

  • Prepare instruments if required for lessons.

  • Liaise with technicians to keep equipment in working order and organise a daily clean of studios.

  • Assist the Nexus Instrumental Programme:

    • Liaise with external tutors regarding timetabling, room usage, new learners, communication with teacher/parent/learner

    • Prepare instrumental tutor calendars, monitor school events and dates.

    • Oversee Instrument rental and maintenance.

    • Ensure tutors are aware of examination dates and enrolment deadlines.

    • Involvement in whole school events and activities as required.



I arrive at around 8am and check the studios are set up ready for the first lessons. At 0815 we have a quick team meeting and then I answer some emails about the Instrumental Programme and do some ordering of sheet music. After break I assist in a music class, supporting the teacher by accompanying the learners. I then do some planning with the Theatre Technician regarding an upcoming concert. I have an early lunch so I can be available to run an ensemble with Year 7 during their lunch break. After school I join a CCA, an extracurricular music club. I ensure the studios are in good shape for the next day before leaving for home.




  • A relevant degree or diploma in music

  • Can play confidently 1 or 2 musical instruments

  • At least two (2) years of relevant working experience 

  • Previous work or volunteer experience working with children is preferred 

  • Previous work or volunteer experience working in Music is preferred

  • A demonstrated and genuine liking and appreciation of children

  • A passion for music and performance

  • Motivated

  • Organised and efficient
