JOB PURPOSE


To take an active role in supporting the activities of the counselling service which supports students with a range of emotional and psychological difficulties. In addition to promoting personal development and academic progress the Counselling will work to help sustain students in continuing with their studies.
The counsellor will work closely with other colleagues that make up the counselling team staff. The Counsellor will report to the Head, Centre for Counselling Services (CCS).


AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITES

• To deliver hands on student counselling through individual and group sessions
• To plan and support the development of the counselling, special needs and mental health services in line with the departments current policies and procedures
• To undertake psychological assessments for students who have special needs, mental health problems etc
• To provide a safe and professional service in accordance with Lembaga Kaunsellor’s code of ethics
• To coordinate the administrative tasks of the Centre – client’s assignment and management, ie counselling or special needs client databases.
• To contribute in mental health awareness related activity and promotion for student and campus community at large
• To represent CCS in student consultative meetings, partnership meetings with other stakeholders as and when required
• To lead the primary investigations and assessments during mental health crisis, medical emergencies etc
• To support and participate in the planning and implementation of activities and events organized by CCS
• To deliver and facilitate workshops and talks on specific topic areas
• To support the tasks related to social media and promotion.
• Any other responsibilities that may be assigned to you from time to time.


JOB SPECIFICATIONS
MINIMUM ACADEMIC/PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATION
Preferably possess a Master’s degree in counselling/guidance or counselling psychology and accredited membership of a recognized professional body, eg, Lembaga Kaunselor


RELATED EXPERIENCE
•At least 5 years of related working experience in a counselling role, preferably from within a higher education institution•Experience in leading mental health related project, activities•Experience with special needs clients will be a value-added advantage
• Good interpersonal and communication skills with ability to relate with others from the wider campus community
 • Adhere to confidentiality, sensitiveness and discretion when handling student problems.
• Adhere to the counsellor’s professional code of ethics (Lembaga Kaunselor)
• Knowledge of the use of a recognized counselling approach, including process and techniques
• The ability to relate and work well with clients on a variety of issues including but not limited to grief and loss, relationship issues, exam stress procrastination, low
self-worth etc.
• Good grasp of counselling skills, i.e listening, attending, client change etc.
• Excellent communication skills: Oral and written
• Conversant with the following software: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Canva
• Strong in administrative ability
