Senior University Counsellor

To take an active role in supporting the activities of the counselling service and psychoeducation which supports students with a range of emotional and psychological difficulties. In addition to promoting personal development and academic progress, the counselling service will also help to sustain students in supporting their academic journey. This position requires the candidate to have the passion for working and guiding the young adults of this current generation.
The counsellor will work closely with other colleagues that make up the counselling team staff and will report to the Head, Centre for Counselling Services and Student Welfare.
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITES
• To contribute and support overall development of the counselling, special needs and mental health services based on department’s current policies and procedures.
• To deliver hands on student counselling through individual and group sessions.
• To lead and coordinate primary investigations and assessments during mental health emergencies etc.
• To undertake psychological assessments for students who have special needs and/or, mental health diagnosis etc.
• To collaborate closely with mental health professionals and build a good supportive network.
• To provide a safe and professional service in accordance with Malaysia Board of Counsellor’s code of ethics.
• To contribute to mental health awareness related activity and promotion for student and campus community at large, by conducting workshops/talks/events on specific topic areas.
• To represent CCS in student consultative meetings, partnership meetings with other stakeholders as and when required.
• To support and participate in the planning and implementation of activities, events, social media content building related by CCS functions.
• To update timely on the clients’ records, statistics and other administrative duties.
• To partake in various computer or cloud-based software to ease the administrative work.
• Any other responsibilities that may be assigned to you from time to time.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS
MINIMUM ACADEMIC/PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATION
• Possess a master’s degree in counselling or counselling psychology from a accredited institution
• A licensed counsellor under the Malaysia Board of Counsellors
RELATED EXPERIENCE
• At least FIVE(5) years of related working experience in a counselling role preferably within a higher education institution or other relevant educational setting.
COMPETENCIES (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES)
• Possess positive interpersonal and communication skills with ability to relate with others from the wider campus community, eg, academics, family members/guardians.
• Strong intercultural knowledge and understanding towards young adults.
• Adhere to confidentiality, sensitiveness and discretion when handling student problems.
• Adhere to the professional code of ethics under Malaysia Board of Counsellors.
• Able to use recognized counselling approach and counselling skills, including process and techniques.
• Possess the ability to relate and work well with clients on a variety of life issues and challenges.
• Conversant with computer/cloud-based software: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Canva (or other designing platforms)
• Possesses a good command of English, Bahasa Malaysia, or one or more languages. Good command of spoken and written Chinese is an added advantage.
