JOB PURPOSE
A Fellow supports research within a Faculty/School/Research Centre by developing proposals and projects, plans and coordinates research activities, undertakes research, leads or is a major contributor to a programme/project in accordance with University strategy, policy and procedures and funder requirements.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop new ideas for research in collaboration with faculty members and external parties.
- Plans research projects, preparation of proposals and applications to external bodies, e.g. for funding and contractual purposes.
- Manages the research activities of the team, including research budgets and managing the use of research resources.
- Contribute to teaching and assisting in the supervision of postgraduate research students and in the development of student/ junior researchers’ research skills.
- Contribute towards the development of research reports and publications, preparing papers and presenting research progress and outcomes of research projects.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS
TENURE
- This position is contractual with a minimum of 1 year and maximum of 2 years for the first appointment. Subsequent re-appointment is subject to performance evaluation, strategic needs of the School/Faculty and budgetary funding.
MINIMUM ACADEMIC / PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATION
- Applicant must have a PhD and expertise in the area as indicated by published research with a strong publication record in high quality journals and competitive research grants won.
- Appointment as Fellow or Senior Fellow will commensurate with experience of the candidate.
- While the guideline below gives a general recommendation of the appointment level, the School may determine this in line with their needs, budgetary limitations and willingness of the applicant for the position.
The following shall be taken as a general guide for level of appointment:
1) Research Fellow
- 3-6 years of experience post-PhD in a directly relevant position.
- Record of publication in high quality journals e.g. journal titles in the top 50% within the discipline domain (Clarivate/Scopus).
2) Senior Research Fellow
- 7 years of experience post-PhD in a directly relevant position, with evidence of leadership capability.
- Strong record of publication in high quality journals e.g. journal titles in the top 50% within the discipline domain (Clarivate/Scopus).
- Record of postgraduate supervision of research students, evidence of competitive grants won, especially from international funding agencies and industry.
RELATED EXPERIENCE (GENERAL)
- Experience in postgraduate supervision.
- Experience of managing projects and teams.
- Successful in obtaining grant funding.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Evidence of the ability to facilitate collaboration within the University and external parties to successfully complete research projects.
