Library Assistant

JOB PURPOSE
The Library Assistant will play a key role in supporting the Librarian in delivering high-quality information and reference services to library users, including staff and students. The position contributes to the effective operation of library services by assisting users in accessing information resources and responding to enquiries. It is part of a team that ensures library materials are made available to users and delivered in a timely manner.
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES
Collection Development:
• Assist in developing subject-specific collections and reading lists for new and existing programmes
• Assist librarians in developing subject-specific collections and reading lists for new and existing academic programs.
• Support resource selection and organization to meet curriculum requirements and student research needs.
• Assist in promotion and marketing
• Assist Librarian to initiate campus wide promotion of library services including reference services, information literacy programmes,collection development and research skills classes
• Support the Librarian to plans and organize for the special programs involving the use of library resources.
Information Literacy (IL) Support:
• Assist in preparing and supporting in teaching and learning
• Assist in preparing and delivering IL sessions, including library catalogue use, online resources, research skills, and other relevant topics.
• Assist Librarian to support lecturers in organizing IL classes and research skills sessions for students.
• Contribute to Help the development of online tutorials and information literacy tools to enhance student learning.
• Assist with the Reference Services
• Assist in providing efficient reference services to students and staff in person by phone and via email
• Support students and staff in the use of print and electronic library resources.
• Help manage and assign incoming reference inquiries and maintain accurate tracking records.
• Assist in supporting staff and students of designated programs regarding their research or assignment-related inquiries.
• Participate in library social media activities, including updating Facebook and Instagram according to schedule.
• Support librarians in performing subject-specific studies or research tasks as needed. required
Assist with administrative duties
• Ensure library notices and information displayed are updated timely manner.
• Assist with administrative duties related to information services.
• Maintain accurate records and databases related to library services, resources, and programs.
• Assist in organizing schedules, class bookings, and other library events.
• Prepare reports, summaries, or documentation as required by library staff.
• Support day-to-day library operations, including coordinating logistics for workshops, events, and resource management.
Assist with campus events
• Assist in preparation of notice/banner and other materials for campus events such as Open Day /Orientation Day
• Assist in conducting library tours for new students and visitors during events such as Open Day/Orientation Day
• Contribute to the continuous improvement of the Unit
• Contribute, evaluate and make recommendations to improve work processes and the development and adherence to relevant Taylor’s University and College policies and procedures
• Contribute suggestions for improving the operations of Information Services unit through participation in meetings, discussions and workshops
Other Duties
• Participate in meetings and discussion within Library and departments in Taylor’s
• Undertake shift work (night duty, Saturday, Sunday, public holidays and) as and when required
• Assist in preparing monthly, quarterly report, six-monthly and yearly reports for the unit
JOB SPECIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualification
STPM/Diploma/University degree in related disciplines, and recognized in librarianship with experience in providing reference and information services in the University Library.
Related Experience
Minimum one (1) year of working with good knowledge and some experience with Reference and/or Information Services, preferably with in an academic library.
