The Design Studio Coordinator/Supervisor/Technician is responsible for managing and overseeing the daily operations of the architecture and interior design studio at the School of Architecture, Building and Design. This includes ensuring the studio is well-organized, equipped, and safe for students and faculty. The role involves providing technical support, coordinating studio resources, and maintaining equipment and materials. Additionally, the coordinator ensures compliance with health and safety standards, assists students with their design work, and collaborates with faculty to support academic activities, fostering a productive and creative learning environment.


AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES

The responsibilities outlined below are not intended to be an exhaustive list but an indication of the main responsibilities of the position.

 

  1. Studio Management:
  • Oversee the daily operations of the architecture and interior architecture design studio, ensuring it is well-organized and adequately equipped for student and faculty use.
  • Monitor and manage the usage of studio space, materials, and equipment, ensuring the space remains safe and conducive to creative work.
  • Ensure the studio is prepared and set up for scheduled studio sessions, including managing any set-up or tear-down of design activities.
  1. Support for Students and Faculty:
  • Assist students with technical and procedural questions related to the studio space and related design equipment.
  • Provide technical guidance and support for students working on projects, ensuring that they have access to appropriate tools, resources, and materials.
  • Coordinate with faculty and teaching staff to support studio-related requirements and any special academic activities.
  1. Resource Coordination:
  • Manage the inventory of furniture and equipment in the studio, including overseeing procurement and restocking processes.
  • Maintain studio equipment, liaising with IT and facilities management when necessary.
  • Ensure that students are familiarized with the studio usage policy and resources.
  1. Health and Safety Compliance:
  • Ensure that the design studio adheres to health and safety standards, including monitoring the use of equipment and materials that may pose safety risks.
  • Ensure the cleanliness of the design studio especially at the end of a studio session.
  • Implement safety protocols and conduct regular safety checks to minimize hazards within the studio.
  • Provide training and guidance on safe studio practices and usage of equipment.
  1. Technical Support and Maintenance:
  • Provide ongoing technical support for students and staff, including troubleshooting issues related to studio facilities.
  • Regularly inspect and maintain studio equipment, ensuring everything is operational and well-maintained.
  • Work with IT staff to address equipment breakdowns or technical issues as they arise.
  1. Administrative Duties:
  • Assist in coordinating studio sessions, workshops, design reviews, exhibition, impact lab activities and events.
  • Maintain accurate records of studio resource usage, inventory, and any incidents or issues related to studio operations.
  • Coordinate with the administration on studio-related budget planning, including tracking expenses and resource requirements.

 

 

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

 

MINIMUM ACADEMIC / PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATION

  • A Diploma or bachelor’s degree in architecture, interior design or a related field. Equivalent practical experience may also be considered.

 

RELATED EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in a similar role within an educational, architectural, or design studio setting.
  • Experience in managing or maintaining design studio equipment and resources is preferred.

 

COMPETENCIES (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES)

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with students and staff.
  • Knowledge of health and safety practices in a workshop or design environment.
  • Proficiency in English (both written and spoken).
