The School Counsellor provides professional counselling services for the whole school, works closely with children from both primary and secondary.

The School Counsellor provides professional counseling to students, in order to facilitate their academic, social, emotional and career development.

 

KEY ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Counselling & Clinical Roles & Responsibilities

  • Provides counselling to individuals, groups or families to help them understand problems, define goals and develop realistic action plans.

  • Develops therapeutic alliance and treatment plans based on students’ psychological / emotional needs and situation.

  • Plans and implements counselling as well as evaluating outcomes.

  • Maintains accurate reports and proper record keeping for all counselling cases and events.

  • Makes referrals to other specialists or to external institutions based on the necessity of the case management.

  • Confers with teachers, principals, other counsellors and guardians when necessary in resolving a crisis or problem while adhering to ethical code of conduct of counseling.

  • Provides crisis intervention to students when difficult situations occur.

  • Attends monthly clinical supervision session/s.

  • Maintains professionalism and an understanding of the counselling ethics of Lembaga Kaunselor Malaysia and/or other professional counselling bodies which has been registered with.

 

Developmental, Outreach and Preventive Programmes & Events

  • Facilitates and supports the Peer-to-Peer Mentoring Programme (PPMP)

  • Organizes outreach, developmental and preventive workshops for students, teachers and/or parents.

  • Plans & promotes counseling awareness in school to students and staff through projects and campaigns.

  • Plans and conducts transition workshops or sessions for students (e.g. JumpStart, Moving Up, Moving On and Ready, Set, Go!)

  • Plans, implements and organises developmental and preventive workshops and campaigns related to wellbeing and mental health (e.g. Mental Health Awareness Week)

  • Designs, develops and maintains the School Counselling Site, social media and communication boards.

 

Other Roles & Responsibilities

  • Promotes, advocates and provides safeguarding and child protection to students who are at-risk. 

  • Provides Critical Incidents support to Taylor’s International School branch campuses and other sister institutions within the Taylor’s Education Group, as and when necessary.

 

 

 

 COMPETENCIES (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES)

  • Knowledge and understanding of counselling principles, methods and techniques

  • Ability to listen attentively and comprehend with empathy and understanding without prejudice or judgment

  • Effectively use a computer and software to produce presentations and reports appropriate to this role.

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision

  • Ability to provide counselling to children and adolescents

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with ability to communicate comfortably with students in a courteous and professional manner

  • Possess a good command of English and Bahasa Malaysia and the ability to speak Mandarin would be an added advantage

  • Possess good planning, coordinating, presentation and time management skills

  • Professional appearance and good working attitude

  • Possess own transport

 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Master / Degree in Counselling / Counselling Psychology or other related discipline with specialisation in counselling.

  • Registered with the Board of Counsellor Malaysia (Lembaga Kaunselor Malaysia) and possess a valid practising certificate.
