JOB DESCRIPTION

Under the direction of the Subject Leader the job-holder is expected to support and assist the smooth running of all aspects of the school’s drama and theatre facilities. This role would suit an experienced Theatre Technician who is familiar with all aspects of theatre lighting and sound. As well as the main 550 seat auditorium there are two black box theatres which are used extensively as teaching spaces.

 

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To maintain and ensure the smooth running of the technical aspects of the auditorium and black box theatres on a day-to-day operation as well as during internal and external events.

  • To design and operate sound, lighting and other effects during performances, as directed by members of the creative and production teams.

  • To help source, build and furnish events and performances with appropriate lighting, sound and scenery as needed.

  • To help maintain and update the lighting, sound, costume, property and set inventories of the Drama Department.

  • To carry out all duties in accordance with Nexus’ Health & Safety Policy and promote a culture of safety.

  • To attend production meetings and regular technical department meetings as required.

  • To ensure the public areas of the theatre and/or production space are in a safe and presentable condition.

  • To keep abreast of changes in health and safety legislation.

  • To work with learners who are in the school’s technical crew, assisting them with their work with school productions and events.

  • To manage the work and schedules of part-time / project based staff as and when they are needed, including providing basic technical training.

  • Involvement in whole school events and activities as required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • A Relevant diploma or higher education qualification 

  • A thorough understanding of the production process and theatre production techniques.

  • Proficiency in lighting, sound, rigging, and stage machinery.

  • Problem-Solving Skills, you should have the ability to troubleshoot equipment quickly under pressure.

  • Attention to detail – Ensuring cues, setups, and equipment checks are accurate.

  • Experience with sound and lightning design and digital cameras 

  • Safety Awareness – Understanding of theatre health and safety protocols, including working at heights and electrical safety (A Working at Height Certificate would be useful, but not required).

  • At least two (2) years of relevant working experience would be desirable

  • A demonstrated and genuine liking and appreciation of children and young adults

  • A good understanding and proficiency in English. Clear, concise communication is essential

  • Physical Stamina – Ability to lift, carry, and set up heavy equipment, and work long extended hours.

  • Confident use of software for lighting desks, sound design, projection mapping, and show control systems (Experience with Dante network, Qlab or similar would be beneficial).

  • Motivated, organised, a generally positive attitude
